The Laurentians are one of several ranges that are part of Canada’s
Precambrian Shield. The shield stretches from the Great Lakes to the Arctic Ocean, covering more than half the length of
country. The Laurentian Mountains are
considered to be a “low mountain range” despite the fact that the highest peak
reaches almost 4,000 feet (1,166 meters).
These mountains are considered to be part of the same
formation as New York’s Adriondack Mountains.
The Laurentians have a very wide reach, and their foothills extend slightly into
the province
of Ontario. Because of its
immense size, the range has several lakes tucked away inside. These bodies of
water fee into several well-known rivers, such as the
Gatineau, Nord, Lièvre and St. Maurice.
One of the most interesting facts about the Laurentians is
that they are one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world. Its rock deposits
date back to the Cambrian period approximately 540 millian years ago. To give
you some perspective on just how old this is, modern man is believed to have
appeared between 130,000 and 200,000 years ago.

popular ski destination in eastern North America.
